TIME MANAGEMENT SKILLS FOR STUDENTS

Study season is well underway and many of us are likely to be feeling a whole wave of emotions. Stressed, overwhelmed, burnt-out. This week, we have put together a guide of our top tips to help you with your time management.

REVIEW YOUR TIME

A starting point is to add important dates including deadline and exam dates to your calendar. This way you will have a better understanding of how to plan your time, balancing your study schedule with day-to-day life tasks. A good idea is to regularly monitor how long tasks take you and identify if you need to do anything differently.

CREATE A SCHEDULE AND REGULAR ROUTINE

Allocate time slots for lectures, study sessions, and breaks, and be realistic about how much time you need for each task. It is important not to over schedule yourself, or you’ll end up feeling overwhelmed and stressed.

If you are a beginner at developing routines, you can start by creating a daily routine and then evaluating the success. This way, it is easier for you to follow a routine that has a better possibility for success. Try to keep your routines flexible, as you have less chance keeping up with a very strict routine.

EMBRACE TECHNOLOGY

There are so many great apps designed to help you study more productively. Here are a few productivity apps you can try:

  • GoodNotes – Import planners from the web and create visual representations of your ideas.
  • SimpleMind – Map out your thoughts and ideas in a way that works for you.
  • NaturalReaders – Text-to-speech software that can read your lecture notes aloud in real-time.
  • Stay Focused – Blocks all notifications and apps, allowing you to concentrate.
  • Trello – Interactive task boards that allow you to collaborate with others on group projects. Our Content Creators are big fans of this one!

PRIORITISE TASKS

Categorise tasks based on urgency and importance. This way, you can give more time and effort to the tasks that matter. Begin with quick and simple tasks first. This frees up time and space to tackle bigger projects.

WORK ON ONE TASK AT A TIME

Trying to do too much at once is never productive. Trust us! Whilst multitasking may seem like a good idea, you can end up spending more time than needed to complete tasks. Focus on one task at a time for effective learning and productivity.

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY

Everybody has different prime times. For example, the times we are most alert for productivity, are early morning starts or afternoon.  Listen to your body and know the times you have high energy levels to capitalise on your productivity.

TAKE REGULAR BREAKS

While it may seem counterproductive, taking regular breaks can boost productivity. Short breaks, such as exercising, spending time on hobbies, or going for a walk, can help to clear your head and improve your focus.
